Introduced in 1989, the 964 marked the first major technical transformation of the 911 since its inception.
While retaining the familiar silhouette, nearly 85% of the car was newly developed. Coil-spring suspension replaced torsion bars, ABS and power steering became standard, and for the first time an all-wheel-drive system was offered.
The 964 bridged two eras — combining classic air-cooled character with modern engineering. It was both evolution and quiet revolution.
Refined. Technical. Transitional.
I. 1989–1991 — Carrera 2 & Carrera 4
II. 1992 — Carrera RS
III. 1993–1994 — Turbo & Speedster
I. 1989–1991 — Carrera 2 & Carrera 4
The modernised 911 debuts. With ABS, power steering and the introduction of all-wheel drive in the Carrera 4, the 964 brought contemporary technology to the traditional rear-engined layout.
II. 1992 — Carrera RS
A return to lightweight purity. Reduced insulation, lowered suspension and focused engineering transformed the 964 into a sharper, driver-oriented machine rooted in motorsport philosophy.
III. 1993–1994 — Turbo & Speedster
The final and most expressive chapter. The 964 Turbo reintroduced dramatic forced induction performance, while the Speedster paid tribute to open-top heritage with a distinctive low-profile character.
